EJ22 to Type2B Hose Specification List

Below are a listing of hoses that I used in my Subaru conversion of my 1977 Fuel Injected VW Bus Type2B. This list should be accurate for all model years between 1975-1979 if a 1991-2003 EJ22 or EJ25 Subaru engine is being installed. All product choices in this list are made based on only one goal: Reliability. Nothing less than the most reliable product available for the job and no parts left out of a conversion for purposes of aesthetics or laziness. Full functionality is assumed.

For Bus model years prior to 1975, the majority of the changes will be more complex, as the fuel hose sizes change, components such as a fuel pump will need to be added, a fuel return will have the be added to the tank, etc.

Hose Type: Coolant
Location: Engine case to Throttle Valve Assembly (used to quickly warm TVA during cold weather so the TVA doesn't stick due to icing.)
Product: HPS Silicone Hoses Brand High Temp Reinforced Silicone Heater Hose
Part Number: HTHH-032-BLKx5
Rating: - 65°F to + 350°F (177°C)
Construction: 1-ply reinforced and knitted polyester fabric, high temperature silicone rubber
Size: ID: 5/16" or 0.32" (8mm), Hose OD (18mm), Wall 5mm
Length: 4ft
Notes: Some conversion designers scrap the TVA heating for simplicity. I keep it for reliability.

Hose Type: Coolant
Location: All coupling points throughout the primary coolant loop beginning at the coolant output manifold, and connecting components down to the radiator and back again to the coolant intake and thermostat housing.
Product: Rocky Mountain Westy Brand Coolant Hose
Part Number: C40MB-150-12
Rating: -65°F to + 350°F (177°C)
Construction: 4-ply silicone hose with fabric wrapped, abrasion resistant outer shell.
Size: ID: 1-1/2"x 1ft
Length: 3ft (total)
Notes: This is by far the most durable coolant coupler I've found, and RMW is the only source I've found for the fabric anti-abrasion wrap style. Buy the 1 ft lengths and cut each section you need (about 4" each) as you need it.

Hose Type: Fuel
Location: Sections between: fuel tank outlet to fuel pump to in-compartment Subaru fuel filter, fuel filter to metal fuel intake rail and finally, fuel output rail back to the fuel tank return.
Product: Gates Barricade MPI Fuel Injection hose
Part Number: GAT 27341
Size: 5/16" or 0.32" (8mm) ID
Rating: SAE J30R14T2 / Low Permeation /CARB approved / gasohol, methanol, and E85 ready / 225 PSI working pressure
Construction: 5 layer with Thermoplastic barrier core
Length: 9ft
Note: This is the highest rating fuel hose you can buy and the only one that is actually built to take the E10 ethanol swill that are in the pumps now. I chose to go with this technology because I don't want the newer fuel eating holes in my hoses. The frequency of dangerously eroded hoses on vintage VWs has become very high in the last 10 years as E10 has rolled out across the USA.

Hose Type: PCV/EEC (Positive Crankcase Ventilation/Evaporative Emissions Control)
Location: Terminating at valve covers, Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, and intake plenum
Product: PCV hose
Part Number: GAT 27019
Rating: SAE30R7 Fuel Resistance
Size: 1/2" (12.7mm) ID / -40°F to 257°F (-40°C to 125°C)
Construction: Spiral reinforced cording, nitrile tube, NBR-PVC jacket
Length: 4ft
Note: Only EEC rated because this hose is only exposed to fuel and oil vapors.

Hose Type: IAC Bypass (Evaporative Emissions Control)
Location: Terminating at IAC valve, and intake plenum
Product: PCV hose
Part Number: GAT 27021
Rating: SAE30R7 Fuel Resistance
Size: 3/4" (19mm) ID / -40°F to 257°F (-40°C to 125°C)
Construction: Spiral reinforced cording, nitrile tube, NBR-PVC jacket
Length: 3ft
Note: When the IAC is switched open, it does double duty as a throttle bypass valve to pass air directly from the intake plenum. This hose needs to be extra long because it isn't molded and needs a large radius to exit the IAC and then re-enter the fitting on the plenum without kinking.

Hose Type: EEC EVAP
Location: Ends terminate at the Charcoal Canister outlet and the EVAP inlet to the purge valve for periodic venting to the engine intake.
Product: EVAP hose
Part Number: GAT 27068
Rating: SAE30R7 Fuel Resistance
Size: 1/4" (6.3mm) ID / -40°F to 257°F (-40°C to 125°C)
Construction: Spiral reinforced cording, nitrile tube, NBR-PVC jacket
Length: 3ft
Note: This is the yucky end of the vapor recovery (charcoal) canister. I double clamped a piece of the 1/2" ID hose around this hose and the fitting, both of which are 1/2" OD, but 1/4" and must match with a 7mm fitting at the EVAP inlet. This is one of the hoses that I had to 'prepare' with the boiling water prep method.

Hose Type: EEC EVAP
Location: Ends terminate at the Charcoal Canister outlet and collected to a nylon tee from the fuel tank vents to the left and right of the engine bay.
Product: EVAP hose
Part Number: GAT 27068
Rating: SAE30R7 Fuel Resistance
Size: 1/4" (6.3mm) ID / -40°F to 257°F (-40°C to 125°C)
Construction: Spiral reinforced cording, nitrile tube, NBR-PVC jacket
Length: 6ft
Note: These hoses take the place of the steel piping that ran across the 'ceiling' of the engine compartment in the stock installation. If you still have the steel piping, use the hose only as couplers and you won't have to buy nearly as much hose. This is one of the hoses that I had to 'prepare' with the boiling water prep method.
